Vic: Victorian vehicle registration costs to rise

MELBOURNE, April 29 AAP - Motor vehicle registration fees in Victoria will rise by$17 as of July 1 and will be indexed by inflation in subsequent years, state TransportMinister Peter Bachelor said today.

Mr Bachelor said additional revenue raised would be put back into roads funding.

"This will lead to a major improvement in the condition of Victoria's roads and enablenew road programs to be undertaken sooner than would otherwise be the case," Mr Bachelorsaid.

He said it was the first increase to the state's motor vehicle registration fees since 1994.

Mr Batchelor said the price hike was expected to raise an additional $60 million over four years.

Motorcycle registration will rise between $3 and $4 a year, he said.

Truck registrations will not be affected by the move, because they were set nationally.
